Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the Canadian government is earmarking $2 billion over four years to build armoured combat support vehicles in southwestern Ontario.
The federal government said it entered a strategic partnership with General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada Corp. , a unit of U.S.-based General Dynamics Corp. , to build 190 vehicles in London, Ont. The deal will expand the country’s fleet to 550 and the vehicles are expected to be used in training exercises at military bases across the country.
“This partnership will create or sustain more than 6,000 high-paying jobs across Canada every year over the next eight years,” the government said in a news release.
Canada’s defence industrial strategy rolled out earlier this year pledged to enter into formal strategic partnerships with Canadian companies that could become global champions and meet the country’s defence needs. GDLS-Canada is the first company to be designated as a strategic partner.
